Clutches

Clutches transmit or cut rotation between two power transmission shafts.

The line-up includes Cam Clutches (one-way clutches) and SR Clutches (single-revolution clutches). Cam Clutches are mechanical non-backlash structures with a number of cams arranged between the inner and outer races and are available for three different applications: backstop, overrun and indexing.

With a simple lever operation, SR Clutch can give a single or an integer revolution at the correct timing from the continuously rotating outer race (drive side) to the inner race (load side).

Cam Clutch (One-way Cam Clutches )

When it comes to mechanical One-Way Clutches, Tsubaki Cam Clutch is the best

This is a mechanical one-way clutch. It uses multiple cams arranged so that there is no backlash.
Cam clutches have three applications: backstop, overrun, and indexing.

SR Clutch (Single Revolution clutch )

SR Clutches provide a single or integer revolution from the continually rotating outer race (drive side) to the inner race (load side) by simply pulling a lever.

Because the inner and outer races are designed to engage, the clutch transmits highly reliable and accurately timed drive motions not possible with clutches based on friction mechanisms, ratchet mechanisms, or pin and key mechanisms.

Product Lineup for Clutches

Overrunning

In this type of application, the different conditions of engagement and disengagement are repeated arbitrarily, when the Cam Clutch inner and outer races engage each other to transmit torque, and when the Cam Clutch continues overrunning through the difference in rotating speed and direction between the inner and outer races. This is the same behavior as a freewheel on the rear bicycle wheel.

Example of two-speed drive

Example of two-speed drive

The figure is an example of the Cam Clutch used for two-speed drive.

The gear motor for low speed drive is in continuous operation.
To switch to high-speed drive, turn on the high-speed drive motor.

Example of roller conveyor transfer

Example of roller conveyor transfer

The figure shows an example of a cam clutch used in the part where the conveyed material moves from the high-speed side to the low-speed side.

The roller conveyor is driven by the gear motor through the chain.
At this time, the cam clutch is engaged from the outer race side.

When the conveyed material enters from the high speed side to the low speed side, the inner race tries to rotate in the direction of the arrow at a rotation speed faster than the rotation speed of the outer race. At this time, the cam is oriented so that it will not engage, so the inner race will overrun.

When the speed of the conveyed material slows down and the rotation speeds of the outer race and inner race become the same, it returns to the engagement from the outer race side.

Benefits of using a cam clutch

  • ・Switching is possible only by ON/OFF operation of the high-speed motor.
  • ・Switching operation is also possible when driving is distributed to multiple shafts from the main motor.
