Clutches

Clutches transmit or cut rotation between two power transmission shafts.

The line-up includes Cam Clutches (one-way clutches) and SR Clutches (single-revolution clutches). Cam Clutches are mechanical non-backlash structures with a number of cams arranged between the inner and outer races and are available for three different applications: backstop, overrun and indexing.

With a simple lever operation, SR Clutch can give a single or an integer revolution at the correct timing from the continuously rotating outer race (drive side) to the inner race (load side).

Cam Clutch (One-way Cam Clutches )

When it comes to mechanical One-Way Clutches, Tsubaki Cam Clutch is the best

This is a mechanical one-way clutch. It uses multiple cams arranged so that there is no backlash.
Cam clutches have three applications: backstop, overrun, and indexing.

SR Clutch (Single Revolution clutch )

SR Clutches provide a single or integer revolution from the continually rotating outer race (drive side) to the inner race (load side) by simply pulling a lever.

Because the inner and outer races are designed to engage, the clutch transmits highly reliable and accurately timed drive motions not possible with clutches based on friction mechanisms, ratchet mechanisms, or pin and key mechanisms.

Indexing

This is also referred to as a rotary intermittent feed. Transmits torque to the inner race (shaft) by converting the outer race motion for a certain cycle into intermittent rotary movement.
High-frequency engagement and freewheeling are repeated in this application.

The outer race is given a reciprocating motion of a certain angle, and the cam clutch engages and overruns alternately and continuously for intermittent feeding.

Example of sheet feeding of pouch making machine

The figure left shows an application example of use for feeding a plastic sheet in a pouch-making machine.

The reciprocating motion from the eccentric disk is accelerated by the rack and pinion, and the reciprocating angle of the outer race of the Cam Clutch is increased. A brake is used in order to improve the precision of the vinyl sheet feeding pitch.

Benefits of using a cam clutch

  • ・Higher feed frequency than servo motors is possible. (Max. 1200 times / minute )
  • ・The feed lengths can be adjusted steplessly, eliminating the need for parameter settings.
  • ・A low-cost indexing mechanism can be realized.
